Note that some of these internships do not list deadlines, that is because they can be applied for year-round. For others, the deadline may have passed, but if they seem interesting, check them out, because they can often be applied to every year. If you are not sure about an internship, follow the link to its website and get more information.


Specific Internships

Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institutes

PPIA is a national program that prepares young adults for an advanced degree and ultimately for careers and influential roles serving the public good. PPIA has an outreach focus on students from groups who are underrepresented in leadership positions in government, nonprofits, international organizations and other institutional settings. The PPIA Junior Summer Institutes (JSI) is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for graduate programs in public and international affairs and careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The JSI curriculum includes economics, statistics, domestic/international policy issues and leadership topics, all designed to sharpen the students' quantitative, analytic and communication skills. There are JSI programs at UC Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, and Princeton University. As a PPIA JSI Fellow you are entitled to the following benefits: Full tuition at a PPIA Junior Summer Institute; Eligibility to receive assistance with travel expenses; Minimum of $1,000 stipend; University housing with a meal plan; Books and related course materials; and GRE prep. Washington Center's Public Service Internship Program for Students with Disabilities
The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) is working to help students with disabilities develop leadership skills and gain valuable work experience in public service. The Washington Center compliments students' professional experience with solid academic training for credit from highly qualified instructors. In addition, students will be exposed to community, national and international leaders through workshops, seminars, lectures, embassy visits and networking events held throughout the course of each semester. Interns are offered a fully inclusive program, including accessible housing. Deadlines: Spring 2009 - November 15, 2008, Summer 2009 - March 13, 2009, Fall 2009 - June 12, 2009

 

AAPD Administered Summer Internships for College Students With Disabilities

AAPD administers two prestigious internships. One is funded by the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation and places students in congressional offices in Washington, DC. The second, funded by Microsoft, is for students majoring in information technology and accepted candidates will work in various agencies in the executive branch of the federal government. William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship

The Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy Program (NSPP) of the Aspen Institute in Washington, DC, offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship three times annually. The fellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of color. The Hearst Fellow serves as an intern with NSPP. Through this fellowship, NSPP seeks to introduce a diverse group of students to issues relating to philanthropy, volunteerism, and nonprofit organizations. Recipients may arrange with their colleges or universities to receive academic credit for this experience.

The student must be able to intern for 10-15 weeks at the Washington, DC, office of the Aspen Institute. We generally expect that Fall and Spring internships will be part-time (10-20 hours per week) and Summer internships will be full-time. All travel and housing costs must be covered by the student. A fellowship grant of between $2,500 and $5,000 will be awarded, depending on the recipient’s educational level, financial need, and time commitment. Deadlines: Spring 2009 - December 15, 2008, Summer 2009 - March 15, 2009, Fall 2009 - July 15, 2009

 

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Summer Internship

Every summer (early June-early August), 32 promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected for an eight-week program in the nation’s capital. While in DC, interns work in the offices of U.S. representatives. Interns benefit from the leadership development curriculum’s emphasis on work experience, community service, and learning. This comprehensive three-prong approach fosters critical professional development and personal growth in the participants. There is a $2000 stipend and housing is provided. Deadline: January 31, 2008

 

The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP)

SR-EIP offers undergraduates, interested in pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD, the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. The SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences and humanities to consider research careers in the academic, public or private sectors. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the end of their summer research activity and complete a program evaluation. All participants are expected to make oral or poster presentations of their research at the Leadership Alliance’s annual, national symposium. This all expense paid summer internship provides students with a competitive stipend, travel and housing. Deadline: February 1, 2008

 

Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP)

The goal of the this program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue academic careers. SROP helps prepare undergraduate students for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities. The major activity of the SROP is an in-depth research experience with students working one-on-one with faculty mentors. SROP students are required to write a paper and an abstract describing their projects and to present the results of their work at a campus symposium. Each student receives a stipend of at least $2,500 for the summer, plus up to $1,100 toward room and board and travel to and from the host institution. Deadline: February 10, 2008

 

Into The Fields Internship

Into the Fields (ITF) is a ten-week summer internship and leadership development program that creates opportunities for college students to work for fairness in our agricultural industries. Through the Into the Fields Program, college students from diverse backgrounds work full-time with farmworkers to promote greater respect and justice for the people who supply food for our tables. SAF Interns provide much needed skills, energy and time to farmworker organizations and receive a life-changing educational experience in return. Each summer, thirty students work in migrant education programs, rural health clinics, legal services, immigrant assistance organizations, policy and research groups, and with community & labor organizing projects in North and South Carolina. SAF Interns provide health education to farmworkers, promote workplace safety and pesticide education, teach English as a Second Language, educate farmworkers about their legal rights, and organize workers into labor unions. By fulfilling Into the Fields expectations, Interns receive on-going training, furnished housing, a per diem of $1,200, a post-service scholarship of $1,500, as well as possible academic credit. SAF also covers travel expenses to NC for students from farmworker families. Deadline: February 15, 2008

 

Emerging Leaders Internships

This program, launched and funded by the international consulting firm, Booz Allen Hamilton, is administered by the National Business & Disability Council and provides internships for college students with disabilities. Eileen Sweeney Graduate Internship in Disability Policy

The National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI), in partnership with the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is establishing the Eileen Sweeney Graduate Internship in honor and memory of Eileen. Graduate students aspiring to a career in social policy with a focus on disability are urged to apply for this 12-week summer semester internship. A student will be awarded the internship based on nationwide recruitment and a competitive selection process. The internship provides an honorarium of $3,000. Deadline: March 1, 2008

 

NASCAR Diversity Internship Program

This 10-week, full-time, paid summer internship program is designed to expose diverse college and university students to the many career opportunities within the motorsports industry. In addition to NASCAR, this program involves several NASCAR sponsors and licensees, NASCAR teams and tracks, and other motorsports-related companies. Over 170 interns from across the country have participated in this program, some of whom later accepted full-time positions in the industry. Deadline: March 3, 2008

 

Entry Point!'s Advancement of Science Internships
ENTRY POINT!, (http://ehrweb.aaas.org/entrypoint/) a program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), offers outstanding paid, 10-week internships and semester co-ops in major companies throughout the United States including NASA, IBM and Merck. Qualifying students must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students; be a Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Business, or Computer Science major. At these summer internships for college students with disabilities, you will benefit from a mentor and receive competitive pay. Deadline: There is no strict deadline, but most applications will be expected by March 15, 2008

 

Minority Journalists Invited to Apply for Diversity Fellowships for Environmental Reporting
Minority journalists from all media are invited to apply for a Metcalf Institute Diversity Fellowship in Environmental Reporting. Eligible journalists must have no less than one year of reporting experience and a demonstrated interest in improving their environmental and science reporting skills. The 42-week fellowships include an orientation, an environmental justice workshop, four weeks of independent study, and nine months working as a reporter covering science and the environment at one of six news outlets.

The fellowship includes a $28,000 stipend for ten months and travel funds. Application forms are available at the Metcalf Institute Web site. Deadline: March 18, 2008

 

21st Century Leaders Internship

The 21st Century Leaders Internship of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) is a ten (10) week program that promotes grassroots community organizing and leadership development in key impact areas. The 21st Century Leaders Summer Internship Program will provide students with an opportunity to observe the dynamics of social change by working with community leaders and elected officials in their respective areas to register voters and attend public policy seminars presented by local, county, state and federal officials. The student dedicates ten weeks to reaching his/her goal of registering 1000 new or restored, primarily Latino, voters.

Students have the opportunity to participate in one of two summer internship sessions. The first internship session (Cycle 1) requires a training workshop in Chicago, Illinois, May 16-18, 2008, and will officially begin May 19, 2008 and conclude July 28, 2008. Applications for Cycle 1 are due by May 3, 2008. The second internship session (Cycle 2) requires a training workshop in Chicago, Illinois, June 6-7, 2008, and will officially begin June 9, 2008 and conclude August 28, 2008. Applications for Cycle 2 are due May 25, 2008. Applicants must be high school graduates or college students enrolled for fall of 2008 at an accredited 2 or 4-year College or University, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate involvement in either campus or community organizations. Interns will receive a $2,500 stipend for the ten (10) week program. Interns will be paid $500 every two weeks. Deadlines: May 3, 2008 and May 25, 2008

 

Lider - Leadership Involvement & Development Through Empowerment & Representation

The LIDER program was established to increase the political and civic participation and provide leadership opportunities for Central Americans and other Latinos in California. The LIDER program brings together talented young Central Americans and other Latinos from throughout California and trains them to be new leaders so that they may have an effective role in expanding the civic and political participation of the Latino community. Participants attend an educational and leadership development workshop to gain knowledge about issues pertinent to the Latino community. Participants also partake in a legislative tour of Sacramento to discuss in part water issues, including water conservation water reliability issues. Each year, ten LIDER participants are chosen to participate as Interns in government, non-profit sector, business, and media. Deadline: June 1, 2008

Currently, the Functional Intern program is accepting applications from undergrads or grads who hope to be integrated into one of Coca-Cola's departments including operations, sales, information technology, and more. Bell Laboratories Summer Research Program

Lucent Technologies Bell Laboratories Summer Research Program offers women and members of underrepresented minority groups the opportunity for technical employment experience at our research and development laboratories in Bell Labs. The program, primarily directed toward undergraduate students who have completed their second or third year of college, is designed to attract students into scientific careers, by placing participants in working contact with experienced research scientists and engineers.

Students who apply must be available for at least 10 weeks, starting in early June. Salaries will be commensurate with those of regular Bell Laboratories employees with comparable education. During the summer, living accommodations at a nearby college will be arranged for students who desire them. Bus transportation, between campus housing facilities and Bell Laboratories, is provided. Participants are free, however, to make their own arrangements for board and transportation. Upon reporting for work, each summer employee will be reimbursed for air or surface travel expenses, in an amount not to exceed the cost of round trip economy class airfare.

Internships with International Exchange and Development Organizations
Mobility International USA, an organization devoted to empowering people with disabilities around the world to achieve their human rights through international exchange and international development, provides a listing of more than 20 internship opportunities in international development and international exchange, including information about the sponsoring organization, internship duties, deadlines, financial aid information, and contact information. Mobility international also has 5 exchange programs specifically related to disability rights and leadership. Study and Work Abroad For All
In addition to information about traineeships and volunteer positions this free online database lists universities offering services for disabled students. Presently over 1,100 universities in 36 countries are covered. The database is in English, free of charge and open to anyone.

 

Latinos on Fast Track

Latinos on Fast Track (LOFT) was created to systematically identify, prepare and place emerging Latino professionals in industry specific jobs to bolster the Latino management presence in America’s workforce. Through creative partnerships with the private and public sectors, LOFT identifies ideal candidates for targeted jobs or internships and provides industry-specific training through tutorials, workshops and educational materials. Internships 4 You Website
Internship seekers, employers and career centers all can make use of this online resource. Internships 4 You allows potential interns to search an online internships database for free. Search criteria including 'keyword,' 'job category.' 'state,' 'education level,' and 'when posted,' help users conduct an efficient search. Internship listings include the focus of the internships, the company or organization hiring as well as a detailed account of the intern's duties, and what skills they will have the opportunity to learn. Employers are allowed to post internship, co-operative and volunteer listings on the website free of charge.

 

Internship Database for Latinos in the U.S.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute has a detailed list of over 50 internships available for Latino youth in cities around the country. Most of the internship programs focus on public policy, advocacy and education training for emerging leaders. There are opportunities available with organizations including the National Organization of Women (NOW), Migrant Health Promotion and more. New Initiative to Help Increase Employment for Students with Disabilities through Internships
The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) has resources to help increase employment for students with disabilities through an academic internship program. Through a partnership with the US Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy, the AAPD is working to help students develop leadership skills and gain valuable work experience in public service. Their list includes includes internships at organizations in various states.

 

Workforce Recruitment Program

The WRP's stellar database of individually interviewed and pre-screened college and university students with disabilities is available to meet your summer or permanent workforce needs. This pipeline program is co-sponsored by the US Department of Labor and the Department of Defense. If you are a Federal agency, go to www.wrp.gov. Summer Opportunities for Minority Students
Seven years ago, Caroline Kouassiaman, then a senior at Occidental College, created the first Resource Guide of Summer Opportunities for Minority Undergraduate Students. It was so popular she has updated it and republished it every year. The guide contains descriptions of more than 130 summer research programs, internships, and conferences geared towards minority students. It can be downloaded in as a PDF or Microsoft Word file. Internships for students in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska

DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) at the University of Washington supports college-capable students with disabilities as they pursue challenging academic programs and careers. The purpose of the project is to increase the number of people with disabilities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students with disabilities can become part of the AccessSTEM Team, engaging in an on-line community of peers and professionals, paid internships, other work experiences, research opportunities, and other activities as they transition to college, graduate school, and employment. We are recruiting high school and college students with disabilities in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska to join the AccessSTEM Team.

NEADS Online Work System (NOWS) enables students to post their resumes and employers to post their job openings and internship opportunities. Ability Edge is a Canadian internship program for graduates with self-declared disabilities to assist them in gaining career-building work experience. Ability Edge interns have a university degree or college diploma/certificate and are looking to accelerate their professional careers. Ability Edge internships are paid positions that last for 6, 9 or 12 months and are used by employers seeking more diversity in their workforce.
